I Challenge You As decision day draws nearer, “who” questions are taking priority. “Who will get in? What happens to the people who don’t? Who will I become if I get in? Who will I be, who will I become, if I don’t?” First, I think it’s important to consider why people apply to MIT. My primary reason for wanting to come â€" and the primary reason of everyone I have spoken to about this (both current students and friends who were rejected) â€" was not the fear of being unable to succeed without MIT, but rather a hope that MIT would provide me with an extraordinary experience en route to my success.  Comments like “don’t worry, you’ll still succeed” and “you’ll be great wherever you go” are well-intentioned, but therefore miss their target, because they do not recognize where disappointment stems from. I never thought that failing to get into MIT would mean failing at life. Rather, I thought that getting in would mean having access to unique resources and unique opportunities. A close friend of mine, who was rejected, tells me that he was hurt and disappointed not because he believed he could no longer succeed, but because he lost the chance to have an MIT undergraduate experience. I want to address that particular concern (although perhaps some of you do believe that attending MIT is the only path to success, which is a topic for another post.) Ive been immersed in this place for six months. You’re probably sick of hearing that MIT is what it is because of the people who go here, but its true: MIT is what it is because the people here create their own experience. They fill what would otherwise be a bunch of (not particularly aesthetically pleasing) buildings with energy, personality, and cool ideas. The individual creates his own experience at the Institvte: he takes advantages of the resources that are here, and creates the resources that are not. The process of making what you can from a situation doesn’t require a specific setting. I would never suggest that its easy to recreate an MIT experience (whatever that even means) because I know that youd never believe me. But I will venture to challenge every one of you those who are admitted, and those who are not to concentrate on what you wanted out of an MIT experience when you applied. Hopefully, it was more than the chance to physically walk down a specific hallway, or take a specific class taught by a specific person. I trust that there were clubs you wanted to join, fields you wanted to explore, dreams you wanted to realize. Whatever it is you wanted: hold onto it as tightly as you can. The hard part in realizing those hopes comes after pi day, not before it excelling and being happy will be a challenge for those of you who attend MIT, as well as for those of you who do not. I challenge you to bring your plans and dreams with you, wherever you end up: to resist abandoning them because you’ve been accepted and your life is complete, or because you’ve been rejected and your life is over. To make them happen, wherever you go. You are guaranteed to meet hurdles and obstacles on the way to getting what you want out of college. Not because of where you are, but because of who you are, I challenge you to climb over them, dig through them, beat them down, and not allow yourself to be defined by the school you attend. UChicago Early Applications

UChicago Early Applications November 29, 2013 Applications are up again for Early Action at the University of Chicago this fall. UChicago Early applications are up this year, continuing a trend at the university. Early Action applications to the University of Chicago have in fact increased each of the last five years. With 11,143 students applying via Early Action to UChicago this year, it marked an 8% increase from last years record applicant pool of 10,316 applicants. The official percentage increase, however, is 6.7% as, according to The Chicago Maroon, its due to an additional  130 early applicants from last year not accounted for in the initial official numbers that were released. According to The Chicago Maroon, The College has seen, on average, a 20-percent increase in the number of early applicants every year since 2010. According to University spokesperson Jeremy Manier, what this year’s comparatively low rate of increase signifies is unclear for now. I think the expectation is that at some point you’ll see the number reach the natural level, and it’s difficult to tell whether we’re there yet, Manier said.  Last year, early applications comprised about a third of the total pool of 30,396 applications. The overall acceptance rate was 8.8 percent. Additionally, the University of Chicago received more applications from Latino and African American students in this years Early Action pool. And it should come as no surprise that the countries outside of the United States with the highest number of applicants are China, India, Canada, and Singapore. Not exactly shocking! Throughout high school, I was heavily involved in speech and debate, competing in the â€Å"sport† for three years. Although I faced many arduous challenges within the activity, I learned the importance of examining various aspects of life in a systematic and thorough way. Likewise, as I read Plato’s Apology, I began to realize that an essential part of simply living our lives is to also examine and dig deeper into our internal being. In fact, Socrates exclaimed that â€Å"an unexamined life is not worth living† (Plato, 2006, para. 68), but what does he mean by this? When Socrates made this bold statement, I believe that he was stating that we should always question, examine, and define our lives. Why? The thyroid uses iodine, a mineral found in some foods and in iodized salt, to make its hormones. These tests include: a CT scan or ultrasonography. The ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves that are emitte d and received by a transducer that is passed over the neck region. In one scene, Jack, Susie’s father, goes out into the cornfield, trying to catch George Harvey, and he uses the porch light to guide him. While in the cornfield, Jack turns off the light for the first time, which serves as this sign that they are done searching for Susie because there is nothing else that can be done. Another motif, similar to the porch lantern in terms of the role it plays, is Susie’s bedroom. There are multiple scenes where family members of Susie just go into her room, stop, and just look around. They stop and just feel Susie all around them. The room itself represented that Susie, somehow, was still there with them. It was this place where Susie wasn’t missing at all. It served as motivation for the family to continue to look for her; it gave them a glimpse of hope that Susie was still out there and that she needed them very much. A dominant motif throughout the whole movie is the presence and idea of numbers and time. Clocks and the numbers and times on the clocks were depicted all throughout the movie, symbolizing constraint there was for the family. The family had been so focused on simply finding Susie, it was as if they didn’t realize how much time had passed by. Eight years passes by through the course of the movie, and the family doesn’t realize that time is limited and runs out. Battle of Kwajalein in World War II The Battle of Kwajalein occurred January 31 to February 3, 1944 in the Pacific Theater of World War II (1939-1945). The triumph opened the way for the subsequent capture of Eniwetok and a campaign against the Marianas.   Background In the wake of the American victories at Tarawa and Makin in November 1943, Allied forces continued their island-hopping campaign by moving against Japanese positions in Marshall Islands. Part of the Eastern Mandates, the Marshalls were originally a German possession and were awarded to Japan after World War I. Considered part of the outer ring of Japanese territory, planners in Tokyo decided after the loss of the Solomons and New Guinea that the islands were expendable. With this in mind, what troops were available were shifted to the area to make the islands capture as costly as possible. Japanese Preparations Led by Rear Admiral Monzo Akiyama, Japanese forces in the Marshalls consisted of the 6th Base Force which initially numbered approximately 8,100 men and 110 aircraft. This operation was conducted by the V Amphibious Corps Marine Reconnaissance Company and 2nd Battalion, 106th Infantry.    Coming Ashore That same day, members of the 7th Infantry Division landed on small islands, dubbed Carlos, Carter, Cecil, and Carlson, near Kwajalein to establish artillery positions for the assault on the island. The next day, the artillery, with additional fire from US warships, including USS Tennessee (BB-43), opened fire on Kwajalein Island. Pummeling the island, the bombardment allowed the 7th Infantry to land and easily overcome the Japanese resistance. The attack was also aided by the weak nature of the Japanese defenses which could not be built in depth due to the islands narrowness.   Fighting continued for four day with the Japanese mounting nightly counterattacks. On February 3, Kwajalein Island was declared secure. Roi-Namur At the north end of the atoll, elements of the 4th Marines followed a similar strategy and established fire bases on islands dubbed Ivan, Jacob, Albert, Allen, and Abraham. Attacking Roi-Namur on February 1, they succeeded in securing the airfield on Roi that day and eliminated Japanese resistance on Namur the next day. The largest single loss of life in the battle occurred when a Marine threw a satchel charge into a bunker containing torpedo warheads. The resulting blast killed 20 Marines and wounded several others. Aftermath The victory at Kwajalein broke a hole through the Japanese outer defenses and was a key step in the Allies island-hopping campaign. Allied losses in the battle numbered 372 killed and 1,592 wounded. Japanese casualties are estimated at 7,870 killed/wounded and 105 captured. In assessing the outcome at Kwajalein, Allied planners were pleased to find that the tactical changes made after the bloody assault on Tarawa had bore fruit and plans were made to attack Eniwetok Atoll on February 17.
